Tier 2 is for health and social care staff with responsibility for providing care and support for an autistic person or a person with a learning disability. What is Tier 2 McGowan Training?

Tier 1 Part 1 must be completed before attending the Tier 2 classroom course.

Tier 2 McGowan Training is an advanced level of training covering the essential knowledge and skills needed for safe and inclusive care. The training is focused on:

  • Understanding learning disabilities and autism: including best practices
  • Effective communication strategies: Promoting independence, person-centred care, and the appropriate use of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • Legislation and reasonable adjustments: understanding importance of reasonable adjustments, including the crucial role of Hospital Passports and Health Checks.
  • Diagnostic overshadowing and common comorbidities: Acknowledging and understanding unconscious biases to avoid diagnostic overshadowing and learning from insights gained through Learning from Lives and Deaths Reviews (LeDeR).
  • Campaigns and awareness: Promoting awareness of campaigns such as Stop the Over Medication of People with a Learning Disability (STOMP) and Stopping Over-Medication of People with a learning disability, autism or both (STAMP).
